Home Safety: National Window Safety Week

Never knew there was a National Window Safety Week, but this article makes a lot of good home safety points.  Give it a quick read...

Pella Promotes National Window Safety Week, April 1 – 7

Mar 30th, 2012
| By  | Category: Industry News

April 1 – 7 is National Window Safety Week — an annual reminder to parents and caregivers about how to help prevent accidental window falls or injuries and how to use windows for potential emergency escapes. Pella Windows and Doors is working with the National Safety Council (NSC) to promote year-round window safety tips.
“As you open windows to let in fresh air, keep window safety in mind,” says Kathy Krafka Harkema, Pella spokesperson and a NSC Window Safety task force member. “For safety’s sake supervise children at play, and teach them to keep their play safely away from windows and doors.”
About 5,200 children in the United States are taken to hospitals each year for treatment from a window fall, according to a study by the Center for Injury Research and Policy of the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. That’s an average of about 14 children per day. Children younger than 5 made up 65 percent of those injured.
Window Safety Tips:
• Keep furniture such as beds or dressers away from windows. Furniture placed directly under a window can create an enticement for a child to climb and the potential to fall.

Taking a Trip? Tips to protect Your Credit.

Before you travel, follow these tips to protect yourself from identity thieves.
  1. Let your credit card company know when you’re traveling (especially if leaving the country). Fraud departments have become more vigilant about monitoring unusual activity.
  2. If you get a call or email about suspicious activity on your card, don’t give out personal information or call the number on the message (an oft-used trick by identity thieves). Instead, call the customer service number on the back of your card.
  3. Suspend your mail delivery until you return. Your mail can be a treasure chest of information for identity thieves.
  4. Remove credit cards you won’t be using and other personal information from your wallet, and copy any important documents (driver’s licenses, passport, health insurance card, etc.) so you’ll have them in case your wallet is stolen.

Farmers' High-Tech Donation Helps Brighten Young Patients' Stay at City of Hope

Reprint from Farmers.com

While attending a City of Hope event last year, Susan Dailey, wife of Farmers CEO Jeff Dailey, was inspired by the Southern California hospital and research center’s compassionate patient care and innovative work in the fight against cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS.

Learning that many of its younger patients had to leave school for treatment, Mrs. Dailey had an idea that led to a very special donation from the Farmers Boards of Governors — iPads and iPad accessories to help them continue their learning.

The iPads were presented last week during a visit to City of Hope’s Sheri & Les Biller Patient and Family Resource Center by Mrs. Dailey and the Boards of Governors’ spouses and guests.

Doris Dunn, Farmers’ director of Community Relations, presented City of Hope’s Child Life Program Manager Jo Ann Namm with the 32 iPads along with colorful, child-friendly iPad cases known as iGuys. There were also iTunes gift cards that could be used to buy educational apps and games. Thanking Farmers and the Boards of Governors for the gifts, Namm shared a touching example of how they might be used: “Can you imagine what it’s like for a child waiting to undergo an operation? Having an iPad to play games on will really help take his or her mind off the impending surgery.”
Farmers has been a partner of City of Hope for more than 30 years. Learn more about its mission and innovative treatments.

City of Hope pediatrician Dr. Clark Anderson shares inspiring stories of the hospital’s successes in fighting childhood diseases.

Doris Dunn presents the iPads to City of Hope’s Jo Ann Namm. “We hope our gifts will bring these children both learning and joy,” Dunn said.

What About A Timeshare?

Re-print from LegalShield

What You Need to Know Before Buying a Timeshare

With the weather warming and the beginning of spring at hand, many consumers are starting to consider their summer vacation plans. Some may even purchase timeshares. Read these tips before
you consider a timeshare.

  • Look at the big picture. Make sure you understand the full cost of the timeshare, the yearly maintenance fees, terms and conditions. Ask a lot of questions and do not accept vague answers. If a sales person is vague or evasive, walk away.
  • It is a buyer’s market. Like the housing market, there are currently more timeshares for sale than there are buyers. Shop around, you may be able to purchase at a discount.
  • A timeshare is not an investment. Buying a timeshare is similar to buying a car in that the value will not increase after your purchase. Purchase a timeshare because you want to use it, not because you want to invest your money.
  • Ignore high-pressure sales tactics. Timeshare sales can be full of gimmicks and free giveaways, but you should not purchase a timeshare because of a free TV. Make sure it is the timeshare you are buying into and not the sales tactics.
  • Do not be afraid to walk away. By walking away from a high-pressure salesperson, you can take control.
  • Before you sign anything have your documents reviewed and talk to your LegalShield provider law firm. Take advantage of your LegalShield membership and call today!

American Chopper Creates for the March of Dimes

'American Chopper: Senior Vs. Junior': Paul Jr. Reveals Custom Bike For March Of Dimes (VIDEO)

Paul Teutul Jr. took the task of designing a custom motorcycle for the March of Dimes very seriously on "American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior" (Mon., 9 p.m. ET on Discovery). "We wanted it to be March of Dimes, but we also wanted it to have a little toughness," he explained at the unveiling.
The idea was to represent the venerable charity organization while at the same time making sure it was something people would want to buy, own and drive. While it had soft colors to represent the expectant mothers and children supported by the March of Dimes, it still managed to look cool and dangerous.
A representative from the March of Dimes spoke about what the motorcyle represented. "When people see the bike I hope they see more than the bike. I hope they realize the March of Dimes is there for them every single day doing research, helping moms stay pregnant and healthy and delivering healthy, happy babies. If the worst should befall them, we're there as well."

March for Babies 2012 is Coming

From March of Dimes...

Great News!
We are thrilled to announce the U.S. preterm birth rate has slipped to under 12 percent for the first time in nearly a decade! This marks four consecutive years of declines — potentially sparing tens of thousands of babies the serious health consequences of an early birth.

We can't wait to see you at March for Babies this spring where we will celebrate both your efforts and the progress we have seen in the fight against preterm birth! Your commitment allows us to continue our work towards the day when all babies will have a healthy start in life.

Securing Your Cell Phone From Identity Theft

I teach the California State Life Insurance Agent Pre-Licensing class.  The state tracks people by their Social Security Numbers.  I'm always surprised by the number of people (usually younger) who store their SS# on their cell phone.  When I have them fill out the registration forms, they flip open their phones to get their sensitive info.

Am I missing something here?

When I saw this article, thought I'd pass it along.  Seems like cell phones, security, and identity theft prevention will be more and more something for us to be mindfull of...

6 Legal Tips to Secure Your Smartphone
Re-print from LegalShield

The number of Americans using smartphones is rising dramatically. As smartphone speed and technology improve, individuals are using their phone to access personal information. Many users now access and manage business and personal email as well as banking and other financial data from their phone. This can make a hacked or stolen phone a one-stop shop for would-be thieves and scammers. These tips will help protect personal information on your phone.

Disaster Preparedness: Floods, Earthquakes, Fires

This week was Flood Safety Awareness Week.  March 12 to 16, 2012.  Here's a look back at last year's blog on flood safety, and general natural disaster preparedness.  Read below.

Here's our article on whether you really need flood insurance for your home.
Disaster responses from insurance companies.

Here's our blog on "Bug-Out-Bags" after the 2011 power black-out.

re-print from our blog in 2011:

Image of Flooded roads in Utah
National Geographic
The events surrounding the earthquakes in Japan followed by tsunamis remind us how quickly, and drastically, our lives in California can change in moments.

March 14-18th is Flood Safety Awareness Week. The information provided often applies to all the disasters California can face like earthquakes and wildfires, not just flood.

"Flood Safety Awareness Week, sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and supported by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), was created to highlight the causes and consequences of flooding and educate communities on how to prepare for and protect their homes and businesses from the devastating effects of flooding." Source: http://www.floodsmart.gov/

If you're asking yourself, "Why would I worry about flood? I don't live in a high risk area."

Floodsmart.gov reminds us that "Nearly 25% of flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas."

"But San Diego?"

Construction and development can change the natural drainage and create brand new flood risks. That's because new buildings, parking lots, and roads mean less land to absorb excess precipitation from heavy rains.

Anywhere it rains, it can flood. A flood is a general condition where two or more acres of normally dry land or two or more properties are inundated by water or mudflow. Many conditions can result in a flood: hurricanes, broken levees, melting snow as we enter spring, outdated or clogged drainage systems and rapid accumulation of rainfall.

"Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, doesn't mean you won't in the future. Flood risk isn't just based on history, it's also based on a number of factors: rainfall, river-flow and tidal-surge data, topography, flood-control measures, and changes due to building and development."

Spring Cleaning, Spring Maintenance & Safety

Re-Print from Farmers Insurance

Happy Spring!

After a long winter for much of the country, warmer weather is a welcome  change. As winter slowly loses her grip, it’s time to think about getting your home ready for spring. Here is a checklist that may help you prepare your indoor and outdoor areas for the change of season:
  • Indoor maintenance
    • Furnace filter — A dirty filter can lower the efficiency of your home’s heating/cooling system so clean or replace as needed.
    • Air conditioning — Test your system before you need it.
    • Caulking — Check for leaks around all doors and windows.  Also check seals around bathroom fixtures to avoid water damage.
    • Smoke and fire alarms — Clean, check batteries and test.
    • Carbon Monoxide detector - Install if you don't have one yet, check batteries if you do.
    • Carpets — Deep clean all carpets.
  • Outdoor Maintenance
    • Check/clean roof — Look for missing, cracked or broken tiles/shingles. For safety reasons, you may want to consider hiring a qualified professional to take care of any repair work.
    • Clean rain gutters - Dead leafs can dry and become a fire hazard.
    • Check driveway and sidewalk — Seal cracks in driveway or any concrete.
    • Check garden hoses and hose faucet — Look for dry rot and inspect hose faucets for possible freeze damage.
    • Check/clean outdoor grills and tanks — Use soapy water to rinse all outside  grill surfaces and grill cleaner for grates and inside of grill. Check gas tank for rust and replace if necessary.

Boat Insurance: Protecting Your Property From Your Liabilities

Re-print from Farmers Insurance

The Pleasures of Boating

Consider Farmers Boat &
Yacht Insurance

For many of us, boating — under sail or power — is one of the best ways to get away from it all.  And if that’s your pleasure — whether you’re fishing, snorkeling or just relaxing — you love your boat. Like many activities, however, boating comes with risks, so make sure you have the coverage you want for your watercraft.

A wide range of coverage

Farmers boat policy was created for boats — power boats, small sailboats and other vessels — so you can make sure that your boat has the specialized coverage you want — coverage you can’t typically get by adding an endorsement to your homeowners policy. We offer a wide range of coverage* that typically includes:

  • Physical Damage
  • Increased Limits on Liability
  • Medical Payments
  • Uninsured Watercraft
  • Total Loss Settlement Option (coverage varies by age of vessel)
  • Personal Property
  • Towing and Assistance
  • Trailer Coverage

Call Me

You may be eligible for discounts that can lower your marine coverage costs. For example, you may qualify for a discount if you have multiple policies with Farmers (such as auto and boat or home and boat). If you take a Boating Safety Course or insure more than one boat with Farmers, you may also be eligible for a discount.

Call me today and let’s discuss your boat coverage needs. I can also help you with coverage for personal watercraft, ATVs, RVs, and Travel Trailers.

Note: Coverage may not be available in all areas.

* Coverage is subject to all exclusions and conditions of the policy. Always be sure to read your policy for details.

March Madness Lessons: Debt Freedom

Re-print from DaveRamsey.com

What Can March Madness Teach You About Getting Out of Debt?

daveramsey.com on 15 Mar 2012

All 68 of the teams in the 2012 NCAA Tournament—best known as “March Madness”—will have at least one thing in common when the tournament starts today.

No matter what type of season they had, whether they are 28-2 or 15-15, whether the year has been filled with injuries or as miraculous as a Disney story, all of these teams only need to win six more games to be national champions.

No matter what has happened in the past, the season starts over today. Each team, each player, each coach has a fresh slate. Past mistakes—missed shots, bad passes, poor coaching decisions—have all been wiped clean. Today, the future—winning the next six games—is all that matters.

But these teams don’t start out in the first round thinking about playing in the championship. They have to approach the tournament “one game at a time.” Athletes and coaches have said that so often that it’s become cliché.

Last Minute Tax Tips

Re-print from Farmers Insurance

Tips to save April 17th is approaching

This year April 15th is on Sunday so the Internal Revenue Service extended the 2011 tax filing deadline to April 17th.1 That’s two extra days but many of us are still not prepared or even preparing. Don’t panic; there’s still last-minute strategies that may help to positively impact your 2011 tax return. Here are some tips you may wish to consider:

  • Contribute to a traditional IRA — If you are eligible to make tax-deductible IRA contributions — eligibility depends on your income and whether or not you participate in a pension, 401(k) or similar qualified plan — it’s not too late to make your 2011 contribution. Just contribute before April 17th and specify that you are making a 2011 contribution. Consider making a contribution even if it’s not tax-deductible.

Life Insurance: Making Sure It Helps, and Doesn't Hurt, Your Estate Tax Liability

The blog below is meant for real Farmers, but the advice is still good for everyone, including our Farmers Insurance clients.

If you're worth more than a one million dollars in assets, it's time to talk to a lawyer to set up a trust that will own your insurance to avoid paying too much in estate (death) taxes.

I'm of course not giving specific legal or tax advice, you need to consult in person about specifics.  I'm just pointing out a potential need many think they don't need to address.  The tax laws will change again in 2013.

The trust would of course require the services of a good attorney.

When you read the article, replace "farm" with the name of your business, and "farmer" with "business owner".

Read below:

Top Estate Planning Mistakes Farmers Make - Part 2

(www.AgWeb.com) - Mar 09, 2012

Continuing our post from yesterday:

  • "I am worth less than $5 million, so who cares?" Well, for one thing, your spouse might care. We have a new estate planning opportunity called portability which allows the unused estate exemption to be transferred to the surviving spouse. Let's assume you passed away in 2011 worth $3 million. If you did not file a return, the extra $2 million is permanently lost. So if your spouse dies in 2012 suddenly worth $7 million (especially if you left her everything in a "I love you" will), she would owe $700,000 of estate tax that she did not need to pay. Many farmers forget to include life insurance that they own in their calculations. They might have an estate of $4 million, but $2 million of life insurance. They think they are worth only $4 million, when they are really worth $6 million.
  • Lack of Liquidity -- Farmers are great at creating nonliquid net worth (farmland, equipment, etc.), but not as good at creating liquid assets to pay estate taxes. Do you know how much your estate is going to cost your heirs and where the money is coming from? Will it negatively impact the farm operation?
  • Proper Ownership of Life Insurance -- If you own or control the insurance, it is included in your estate. Have you considered setting up an irrevocable trust to own the insurance? This gets the proceeds out of your estate and provides liquidity for the estate or income to your spouse for his or her lifetime.

Madison County Insurance agency hit hard by tornado

Re-print from WAFF.com

By Elizabeth Gentle - bio | email

Hazel Green, AL (WAFF) - Residents and business owners took advantage of Monday's sunny weather to clean up and make repairs from Friday's tornado damage.

Rhonda Moore owns Farmers Insurance Group on Highway 231-431. Despite extensive roof damage to her office, it is work as usual.

On Monday, agents filed claims and handled business from their vehicles in the parking lot.

Moore and her son Mark were at work Friday when the tornado hit.

She said they were watching WAFF48 news when the tornado warning was issued.

Mark used his cell phone to video the twister before they had to dive for cover.

'We could hear it waited till the last minute ran in and hunkered down. Started praying as quick as it ripped my roof off it was over you could tell it had gone,' said Rhonda Moore.

Moore says if you need to file a claim, come by their office. Agents are outside waiting to assist you.

Moore doesn't know yet if the building is a total loss or if it can be salvaged.

From the Horse's Mouth: Protecting Your (Furry) Dependents

"What will happen to us when you're gone?"

The following conversation could happen between you and your children, or other dependents, and even with your pets...if they could talk.

For now, we'll have to let Mr. Ed speak for them all.

Talk with a legal adviser to set up the proper trust document, that way when your life insurance pays out, the money is legally spent to protect and provide for your children, spouse, parents, grandchildren, and yes, pets, as you see fit.  Otherwise, they spend it as they wish.

A will doesn't quite to it right.

Then talk with a Farmers Insurance Professional like myself to set up the life insurance funding (with the right beneficiaries) for those trust agreements.
