While attending a City of Hope event last year, Susan Dailey, wife of Farmers CEO Jeff Dailey, was inspired by the Southern California hospital and research center’s compassionate patient care and innovative work in the fight against cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS.
Learning that many of its younger patients had to leave school for treatment, Mrs. Dailey had an idea that led to a very special donation from the Farmers Boards of Governors — iPads and iPad accessories to help them continue their learning.
The iPads were presented last week during a visit to City of Hope’s Sheri & Les Biller Patient and Family Resource Center by Mrs. Dailey and the Boards of Governors’ spouses and guests.
Doris Dunn, Farmers’ director of Community Relations, presented City of Hope’s Child Life Program Manager Jo Ann Namm with the 32 iPads along with colorful, child-friendly iPad cases known as iGuys. There were also iTunes gift cards that could be used to buy educational apps and games. Thanking Farmers and the Boards of Governors for the gifts, Namm shared a touching example of how they might be used: “Can you imagine what it’s like for a child waiting to undergo an operation? Having an iPad to play games on will really help take his or her mind off the impending surgery.”
